TLDR: Santa Brígida sits 20 minutes inland from Las Palmas on the rim of an extinct volcano. Walk the Caldera de Bandama crater, drive up to the Pico viewpoint at sunset, eat lunch at La Casa del Vino, hit the Sunday farmers market, and book a tee time at Spain’s oldest golf course. Two days is enough. You will want a hire car for at least one of them.

Insider Tip

Do the Caldera de Bandama rim walk before 10am. The trail has almost no shade and the path tracks the south side of the crater for half its length. By midday in summer it gets brutal. Park at the small lot near the gate (open 8am to 5pm), do the loop in an hour, then drive up to the Pico viewpoint for coffee and the view.

What Santa Brígida Is and What It Isn’t

Caldera de Bandama from the rim trail

Santa Brígida is a small inland village in the centre-east of Gran Canaria, about 20 minutes by car from Las Palmas city. The Bandama area sits on the south edge of the village, perched on the rim of a 1km-wide volcanic crater that gives the whole place its character.

This is not the Gran Canaria of the package brochures. There are no big resort hotels, no beach, no nightlife strip, and almost no foreign tourists outside the golf course and the Caldera trailhead. What you get instead is quiet, scenic, walkable inland life with proper Canarian food, the island’s oldest wine museum, and one of the most dramatic short hikes in Spain. Most people who stay here do so because they want exactly that.

You can do Santa Brígida as a base for two or three nights or as a single-day detour from a south-coast resort or a Las Palmas city break. Both work. The pace is slower up here, and that is the point.

Quick note: If you are already sold on Santa Brígida and just need a place to stay on the crater rim, check current rates at Bandama Golf Hotel. Otherwise, keep reading for the full guide.

Walk the Caldera de Bandama Crater

The Caldera de Bandama is the obvious headline attraction. It is a near-perfect circular crater, almost 1km across and about 200m deep, formed during the most recent volcanic activity on the island. The rim trail (Camino Borde de Caldera) is around 3km long and takes about 60 to 90 minutes at a steady pace.

You can also descend into the crater itself on a separate trail. That one is harder. Expect about 30 minutes down on loose gravel, half an hour exploring the floor, and 45 minutes back up. Bring grippy shoes. The descent is open from 8am to 5pm and is gated; the rim is open 24 hours.

The trailhead is a 5-minute drive from the centre of Bandama. Bus 311 from Las Palmas (Estación San Telmo) drops you right at the car park if you do not have a car.

Drive Up to Mirador Pico de Bandama

Things to Do in Santa Brígida and Bandama: A Local Guide

The Pico de Bandama viewpoint sits at 574 metres on the highest point of the crater rim. You can drive all the way to the top and park a few metres from the lookout, which makes it the easy alternative to the rim hike if you do not want to walk.

From the top you see the crater on one side and a panoramic sweep over Telde, Santa Brígida, the airport coast, and Las Palmas city on the other. On a clear day you can spot Pico de las Nieves, the highest peak on Gran Canaria, in the distance.

Best time to go is sunset. The east-facing rim catches the warm light on the northeast coast, and the crater fills with shadow in a way that is genuinely worth the short drive. Bring a jacket. It gets noticeably cooler than down on the coast.

Tee Off at Spain’s Oldest Golf Course

The Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas was founded in 1891, which makes it the oldest golf club in Spain. The 18-hole, par-71 course wraps around the south side of the Bandama crater and you can walk to the clubhouse from Bandama Golf Hotel in about 13 minutes.

Visitor green fees run roughly €106 to €130 depending on day and time. The course is open to non-members on weekdays only (Monday to Friday, tee times from 8am to 12:50pm). Weekends and bank holidays are members only. You will need to book at least 24 hours ahead.

Even if you do not play, the clubhouse bar and restaurant are open and the views over the course toward Pico de las Nieves are some of the best on the island.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“Did the rim walk in the morning before the heat kicked in. Took us about 90 minutes with stops for photos. The views down into the crater are unreal. Drive up to the Pico viewpoint after, the parking is right at the top.”

Eat Real Canarian Food in the Village

The food in Santa Brígida is one of the most underrated things about staying inland on Gran Canaria. The village runs on local Canarian cooking, not the international resort menus you get in the south. A few places worth knowing:

  • La Casa del Vino on Calle Calvo Sotelo. Tied to the wine museum. Strong Canarian wine list, lunch built around food that pairs with it.
  • Mallow. A village institution. Churros, paella, wholesome Canarian cooking at local prices. Worth the trip even if you are not staying overnight.
  • El Secreto de Aida in the historic centre. Traditional Canarian dishes like ribs with potatoes and pineapple, stews, hearty plates.
  • Vandama’s Still Life. Grilled meats served in a vineyard setting. Better for dinner than lunch.
  • Restaurante Bandama Golf. The on-site restaurant at Bandama Golf Hotel. Mediterranean and Spanish menu with views over the golf course toward the mountains.

For a wider write-up of where to eat, including price ranges and what to order, see the Santa Brígida restaurants guide.

Visit the Casa del Vino and Taste Local Wine

Gran Canaria has a small but serious wine scene, and the Casa del Vino in Santa Brígida is the closest you will get to understanding it without driving across the island. It is a wine museum, shop and restaurant in one. You can taste local DO Gran Canaria wines by the glass, look at the small museum display of traditional winemaking tools, and stay for lunch.

It is right in the historic centre of Santa Brígida, about 3km from Bandama. Hours vary but it is generally open weekday mornings through early afternoon. Worth calling ahead before you go.

Hit the Saturday and Sunday Farmers Market

Every Saturday and Sunday morning Santa Brígida hosts a farmers and craft market in the village centre. It is small but the quality is high. Local fruit and vegetables, Canarian cheese, marmalades, baked goods, wine, honey, and craft stalls.

Go early. The good stuff goes fast and the place starts winding down by lunchtime. It pairs naturally with breakfast at Mallow or churros from one of the bakery stalls.

Day Trip into Las Palmas City

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is 20 minutes by car or about 40 minutes on Bus 60 (every 30 minutes from Santa Brígida village). It is a proper city with a beach (Las Canteras), a historic old town (Vegueta), the Cathedral of Santa Ana, the Canarian Museum, and a long seafront promenade.

If you are based in Bandama, doing one full day in Las Palmas gives you the contrast: morning at Las Canteras, lunch in Vegueta, an afternoon walking the old town. There is a separate guide that lays out a Bandama-to-Las-Palmas day trip in more detail.

What to Skip

A few honest things this area is not good for. Beach time. Santa Brígida has none. The closest real beach is Las Canteras in Las Palmas, 25 minutes away. Nightlife. There is none to speak of in the village. Big-resort amenities. There are no all-inclusives, no kids clubs, no entertainment programmes. If you want any of those things, base yourself in the south or in Las Palmas and visit Bandama as a day trip.

Practical Logistics

Getting here. Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) is 14 miles away, about 34 minutes by car. There is no direct airport bus to Santa Brígida. A taxi runs around €60 each way. Cheaper option is bus 60 to Las Palmas then change to bus 60 again or bus 311 inland.

Do you need a car. Honest answer: yes, mostly. Bus 311 covers the Caldera trailhead and bus 60 runs into Las Palmas. But for restaurants outside the village centre, the south coast, the rest of the island, and the Pico viewpoint at sunset, you will want your own wheels.

How long to stay. Two days covers the headlines. Three if you want to add a day trip into Las Palmas without rushing.

Best time of year. March to May or September to November. Summer is dry but the trails get hot. Winter is mild but you can get cloudy days inland when the south coast is sunny.

FAQs

How many days do I need in Santa Brígida?

Two full days is enough to walk the Caldera, drive to the Pico viewpoint, eat in the village, and visit the Casa del Vino. Add a third day if you want a day trip into Las Palmas city.

Do I need a car to stay in Bandama?

Mostly yes. Bus 311 from Las Palmas reaches the Caldera trailhead and bus 60 connects to Las Palmas city, but for evenings, restaurants outside the village, and the rest of the island, a hire car makes a real difference.

Is Santa Brígida better than Maspalomas?

Different trips. Santa Brígida is quiet, inland, scenic and authentically Canarian. Maspalomas is beach, dunes and resort. If you want sun and sand, go south. If you want walking, golf, food and quiet, go to Bandama.

What is the closest beach to Santa Brígida?

Las Canteras in Las Palmas, about 25 minutes by car. There is no beach in Santa Brígida itself.

Is the Caldera de Bandama hike hard?

The rim walk is moderate, about 3km on rocky but clear paths, 60 to 90 minutes. The descent into the crater is harder and steeper. The rim is fine for most ages with sensible shoes; the descent needs grippy footwear and a head for loose gravel.

Can non-members play the golf course?

Yes, weekdays only (Monday to Friday) with tee times between 8am and 12:50pm. Weekends are members only. Book at least 24 hours ahead.

Is it worth coming to Santa Brígida if I am staying in the south of Gran Canaria?

For one day trip yes, especially if you combine the Caldera, the Pico viewpoint and lunch at La Casa del Vino. It is a 50 to 60 minute drive from Maspalomas. Not worth it as a half-day rush.
